Solve Writer's Block
Read a book
Sometimes, immersing yourself in the works of others is a great way to get motivated to write. Here are some suggestions to get you on the path to breaking out of your writer's block.
Reading a book can be a great motivator. Maybe you think you can do it better, or you just find yourself inspired by the written word. Whatever your reason, reading a book can get your creative juices flowing. And if you feel the uncontrollable urge to put pen to paper, don't wait until you've finished the book. Put it down and get to work!
Try reading...
- Works by your favorite authors
- Works by authors you don't like
- Works by unknown (to you) authors
If you're blocked on a piece of fiction, try reading...
- Works in a genre completely removed from your writing projects
- Works similar to your writing projects, but not in your genre
- Works not at all similar to your writing projects, but that are in your genre
Write Anyway
Writer's block can't beat regular productivity. Make goals and stick to them, even if you write the worst fiction of your life. A feeling of accomplishment can go a long way toward keeping your spirits up when the writing doesn't want to flow.
Take a Break
Have you had a break recently? If you're having a hard time writing, or being creative with your writing, then a break might be just what you need. The lack of energy that comes with burnout can really play havoc with your creativity levels. So take that break--be it a short walk or a few days away from your written work--and reap the benefits of higher energy levels when you return.
Interview Yourself
Interviewing yourself as if you've finished your book is a good way to get moving again.
Interview yourself about your book as if you had already completed it and were part of a readers group. Not being able to answer your own questions about the book can show you problem areas in your work in progress, possibly leading you out of writer's block. Even if you know all the answers, this can help you solidify your plan for your novel and get you writing again sooner!
